I remember helping Jeremy with his Hair a few times. All the crap we put in it was unreal ( eggs, toothpaste, Elmer Glue). He always got crap for it, but I think that was the point.
It was amazing that the seagulls didn't attack him when we hung out at Leif Erickson park.

We both went to East and both of us hung out @ The Norshor. If my memory is right he actually lived in Superior. He was into punk, and he wasn't the most socialized person. One of my most vivid memories was of him showing up to school one day with 5 15-inch 'liberty spikes" in his hair. He got his ass kicked really bad that day, We both knew it was coming. I really respected him for it, but he actually got hurt.

Just from reading what people have posted here, I'm guessing Jeremy Olsen was that guy. Does that sound about right?

That sounds like Jeremy. I don't remember too many other kids with a mohawk that size.

Wow everyone. I had no idea this string was going on....its really touching to hear your stories and memories. I never did get in touch with Elena - no number for her in his address book, but I will look again to make sure.
Just wanted you all to know that he died of unknown natural causes - kind of shocking for a 39 year old. He had been preparing to move back to San Francisco from Oakland and was looking forward to living in the 24-hour per day city again.
I'm working on photographing his art to post on a website or somewhere. As you can imagine, he would have HATED facebook, but it would be a way for people to comment on his work and share stories with friends that they didn't know - he had a slew of friends all over the country....
I will try to remember to post when I get it up and running.
If anyone is in contact with his family, kindly mention that Kirk from Carlton said howdy, and that I'd often wondered what he was up to. I was friends with Nate Forneris just a little before you knew him, and I knew him again as an adult, too. So, we probably met way back in the day. I'm Christopher Mika, if that rings a bell. I left Duluth when I was 15, and I don't have a real great memory as far as names and peers and things.

Yeah, we were quite disappointed.

It seemed that the people who had more interesting experiences were not really into writing and those people who may have felt more comfortable with the medium didn't feel like they had very interesting stories to tell. I also heard from some people who still lived there felt like it was too small a town and that they didn't want to bring up things that my have been illegal or incriminating in some way.

One of the good things that came out of the experience was that my sister began to do more serious creative writing in an MFA program and has written a bunch of great stories set in the hillside. She has recently become a foster mother herself and is really passionate about it, I'm certain that she'd be very interested in your project. Do we know you?

Oh, that's too bad. I'm in the middle /beginning-middle of trying to write a memoir about growing up in the foster care system in Duluth and Minneapolis. It's a been a really difficult thing to attempt. Your project sounded interesting.
